Telecommunications regulation authority in UAE has issued a fresh guideline related to Virtual Private Networks (VPN). According to the new rule, Virtual Private Networks(VPN) utilization has been declared illegal and it is punishable by law. Telecommunications regulation authority has always pressurized on the issue that Virtual Private Networks(VPN) is against its policy but it was not prohibited earlier. But now police department has also indicated that legal action could be initiated against Virtual Private Network(VPN) users. The act was punishable under the law number 9 in UAE.
In UAE, the Virtual Private Networks(VPN) is mostly used by several private individuals to access VoIP services and to access blocked websites illegally. Dubai Police cyber crime division direction, Saeed Al Hajri said “Tampering with the Internet network illegally is a crime.” He also mentioned that police is behind those individuals who use Virtual Private Network(VPN) services for online blackmailing and cyber related crimes. He elaborated the plan of Dubai police department to track and crack down the offenders.
However, he maintained that police will not initiate suo moto action for using Virtual Private Network services(VPN) but the offender will be charged with hefty fines. He also mentioned that in case an individual is caught using Virtual Private Network(VPN) will be under constant monitoring which could be up to three or four years. The police will even dig old complains in such cases.
