A group of mums and kids with love in their hearts are out to prove that sharing is caring by surprising female domestic workers in Dubai with care packages on Valentine’s Day.
The not-for-profit Dubai Mums Helping Hand community group is aiming to distribute 1,000 ‘WE CARE’ boxes to ladies across camps in Al Quoz, Al Qusais and Sonapur on February 14, to show appreciation for their hard work.
Founded by expat mums Holly Rai, 30, and Stephanie Sutherland, 40, the initiative has brought together 700 members to rally for donations.
Rai said: “Our eyes are open to seeing male labourers working in Dubai – we see them every day on the construction sites and working hard to maintain the aesthetics of Dubai.
However, the female labourer is an untold story.
“It may be the toilet attendants, hospital cleaners, park cleaners, women who work in the beauty parlours – many of them live away from their families in tough conditions on a low salary. We want these women to know ‘we see them’ and we care.
“It’s about putting a smile on their faces and giving them something to help them out.”
Each package contains items including a hairbrush, hair ties, shampoo, soap, nail clippers, lotion, sanitary items, a toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant. Kids are also contributing to the spirited effort with some making posters and sharing them at their schools.
Rai, a British national, said that more than 1,000 people were involved in the project, including various sectors of the community.
Last year, the group handed out treats to labourers working on the Dubai Tram project to show their thanks.
Recalling the smiles on the men’s faces when they got their packages, Rai said the response was “eye opening”.
She said: “The best bit was seeing them all on their buses finishing their day with their treat bags; they waved us all off and were cheering.”
Asked why they chose February 14 to make the deliveries, Rai said: “The concept of delivering on Valentine’s Day is not so much about them understanding the purpose of the day.
“It’s about us, the people involved, giving and sharing our love on a day we are familiar with, associating love and being thoughtful with.”
